Peter Stoll is a musician in Toronto, Canada, playing all sizes of the clarinet family and saxophone, for symphonic and opera orchestras, new music ensembles, and in freelance chamber concerts as well as solo recitals. He teaches privately, and at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, where, in addition to clarinet lessons, Peter coaches chamber music, teaches a woodwind performance class, and runs a course in the Business of Music.
Another side of his career is frequent music festival adjudication, and examining for The Royal Conservatory of Music. Peter has authored a number of recent articles for the International Clarinet Association journal and other publications, and was the chief compiler of the 2014 clarinet examination syllabus for the Conservatory; these are all available for reading and download here on the Publications page. News
- It was a great thrill for Peter to be involved in the rebirth of old friend and noted Toronto composer John Gladwell's clarinet concerto Open Passage with the Counterpoint Orchestra in early June. Originally written for live clarinet and electronic background, John totally re-orchestrated this beautiful melodic work, which received a standing ovation at its live premiere.
- Peter had a great time playing clarinet, bass clarinet and saxophone in an all-star chamber music version of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue at the Stratford Summer Music Festival in late July. Headlined by noted Los Angeles pianist John Novacek, violinist and artistic director Mark Fewer and other leading musicians were also in the band.
- It was so much fun playing in the first ever Opera York summer production, of Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore. Peter is looking forward to their fall production of Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte.
- Peter was thrilled to be included in the chamber ensemble accompanying internationally-famous Oud virtuoso Naseer Shamma in October, for the Music Without Borders festival. It was challenging to play spontaneous improvisations when called upon!
- Peter will serve as the Principal Clarinetist of the Ontario Philharmonic for their upcoming season; the first programme will include several brilliant orchestral showpieces by Ravel and Richard Strauss as well as featuring singer and guitarist Remigio Pereira.
- Congratulations to Peter's UofT student Ben Gillingham-Murray, who after placing first in his class at the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival, was nominated to proceed to the Ontario Provincial Finals in early June, where he again placed first. Bravissimo Ben!
- Congratulations to Peter's former high-school student Nicholas Pantelica, for winning admission to UofT in the fall!
